The light
She could read the satisfaction and joy on Lena's face. Her face was enveloped in a bright glow, a warm, welcoming light. What did she see? Her parents? Her closest friends?
Slowly her eyes moved to where the other was looking. For her, it was a dark, empty alley, full of dirt and grime.
"Thank you," breathed Lena, her voice trembled, "thank you for everything you did for me."
"Don't bother with it. Go now!"
For a second she felt the sting of envy. Wishing to see the light for herself. She saw Lena walking towards the alley, holding out her hand. Then a little hesitation. She turned back to Alyssa and gave her a happy smile. Just a second later, Alyssa was alone in the alley. She bowed her head and closed her eyes. Her own decision. There was no need to indulge in this envy. She had made a decision a long time ago. And she wouldn't stain them with such weak emotions.
She stretched, a reflex she had never been able to take off before turning and starting to walk. Just a moment, then she would have caught herself. Just a moment.
