An unexpected heritage can already bring surprises with it. But the surprises that await Eudora in her great-aunt’s house, she would not have expected even in her wildest dreams.
The wonderful, atmospheric ghost story about Eudora and her two loyal dogs often reminded me of the film “The Woman in Black”. The isolation of the house, the size of the property and whether your own senses are playing tricks on you, are captured perfectly. Because of the calm atmosphere and narration, the moments where the pace gets faster have a great impact.
Eudora is an interesting protagonist, even it took me a moment to get used to her narrator voice. However, when I found myself immersed in the world, I could no longer put the book down. The end of the book surprised me positively in its resolution. I have never seen such a development in books or films yet.
The ending felt rushed. I would have wished for something more than the feeling of a summary in the last chapter. However, that’s the only negative thing I can say about the book and it didn’t take away the fun of reading it.
A clear recommendation for everyone who wants to enjoy a good ghost story.
