In ‘His Scream Queen’ we follow Lucio, who, after Highschool Queen Brittney broke up with him, decides to take revenge on her. He wants to help another girl become a prom queen because Brittney has found him unworthy of being a prom king. His eye falls on Jamie, who has been terrorized by Brittney for years. Together they set about putting the plan into action. As the affection of the two grows, stranger things happen in the city. What begins with murdered animals escalates to human victims. Does someone hunt for prom queer candidates?
The story cast a spell over me from the start. I particularly liked the characters of Lucio and Jamie and their actions were refreshingly little clichéd for me. I really enjoyed accompanying them on their way and getting to know them better and better. The book was well written, but unfortunately it lost me a bit in the end. Sometimes some passages felt more like a quick summary that didn’t quite fit the previous calm preceding. I missed the interactions between the characters in particular.
For me, it also reduced the tension a little, because you get a lot from the opponent’s point of view. But I also know that this is a preference of mine.
I had a lot of fun with the book and fell in love with the characters. If you like classic horror films, I could well imagine that you might like this book too. 4 stars
